If the latest news from the corridors of the US Patent and Trademark Office are to be believed, Apple Inc. is once again planning to launch a ‘smart’ ring. The tech company recently lodged a patent application, spurring speculation that the company is making another attempt to make its mark on the wearable technology sector.
The application which Apple has filed with the US department for a “ring computing device” highlights the fact that in the future the use of touchpads, touchscreen could be “cumbersome, inconvenient, or inefficient for certain tasks and applications”.
“A need therefore exists for a more discreet, safer, more efficient, or more ergonomic way to interact with touchpads or touchscreens,” the document said.
This latest development has sent ripples across the jewelry industry as a “smart” ring can potentially impact the industry. Similar concerns were felt earlier this year when Apple Watch was launched. There were concerns that a smart-watch could take in the sales from traditional watch and jewelry retailers. While the tech giant hasn’t yet revealed how Apple Watch has been accepted in the market and what are the sales figures, there is already a lot of speculation in the media that the smartwatch has failed to impact the jewelry and watch industry as such.
