Australian Miner Lucapa Unearths Large Rough Diamond in Angola

Australian diamond dealer Lucapa Diamond Company recently recovered a 90.32 carat rough diamond from the Lulo Diamond Concession in Angola. The rough gemstone has been categorized as a D color, Type IIa rough diamond. This has been the largest rough diamond mined at Lulo after alluvial mining commenced in January this year.

The latest find surpasses the Type IIa 63.05 carat diamond that was mined in April. There has been several other large diamonds that were mined from Lulo in the recent past. The mined diamonds weighed 56.52 carats, 36.61 carats, 29.94 carats, 21.16 carats, 18.71 carats, and 17.06 carats. There were also two 11-carat diamonds found here.

Lucapa has had a major haul since August 2012 in the area as reports suggest that it has uncovered a total of 33 special diamonds from Mining Block 8. Till now, the biggest overall find for Lucapa has been a 131.40 carat, D color, Type IIa diamond that was recovered in 2012 after preliminary bulk sampling.

Angola’s Lunda Norte province is known to be diamond rick and this is where the Lulo Diamond Concession is located.
