Exhibiting a kaleidoscopic display of exquisite colours, Ammolite is a gemstone, quite similar to that of opal, made from the fossilized shells of ammonite. Ammolite is one of those gemstones, which is biogenic in nature i.e. made from a life process. Other gemstones that are biogenic are amber and pearl. The fossilized shells of ammonites are primarily composed of aragonite, which produces nacreous pearls as well. Ammolite was given the honour of being an official gemstone in 1981 by the World Jewellery Confederation (CIBJO). It was in the same year when commercial mining of Ammolite was started.
